FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 30, 2012

RICHMOND, Ind. — Earlham President David Dawson announced Monday that Jonathan Stroud will join the College in a newly created position, Vice President for Enrollment and Communications.

Since 2002, he has served as Vice President for Enrollment Management at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. He has served in similar positions at Wesleyan College in Georgia, Austin College in Texas, Lyon College in Arkansas and Vanderbilt University in Tennessee.

He is a graduate of Davidson College, where he received an A.B. in psychology and did his graduate studies at Vanderbilt University, where he received an M.S. degree.

In a message to the campus community, President Dawson thanked Provost Nelson Bingham, who convened the search committee, and “all other members of the committee, for their diligent, thorough, and thoughtful work throughout the search process, as well as the Earlham community as a whole for taking time and energy to provide feedback for the committee.”

“I am very pleased to be joining the Earlham College community,” said Stroud in a statement. “While I interviewed with many members of the on-campus community, I look forward to getting to know many more Earlhamites.

“It was actually the many positive conversations which I had with President Dawson and the senior staff, enrollment and communications staff, and other faculty, staff, students, and alumni that convinced me to accept the opportunity to join Earlham. Already I can tell that Earlham is an impressive place and a wonderful, caring community. I am confident that together we can build the optimal enrollment for the College’s present and future.”

In his role at Earlham, Stroud will oversee the integration of admissions, financial aid, marketing and communications. He begins his tenure on July 1.

Jan. 16, 2012 – Brian Dalton has been named vice president for enrollment and communications at Allegheny College. Dalton comes to Allegheny with almost 25 years of experience in higher education and a national reputation for his work in marketing, recruitment and retention. For the last three years he has been on the senior staff at Mercer University in Macon, Ga., first as senior vice president for enrollment management and most recently as senior vice president for strategic planning.

“We are delighted that Brian will be joining an already strong senior leadership team,” said Allegheny president James H. Mullen Jr. “Brian is known not only for his strategic thinking but for finding new ways to enhance the student experience at the colleges and universities where he’s served. We were particularly impressed by his emphasis on fulfilling the promises that colleges make to their students to ensure that their educations serve them for a lifetime. He is a great fit for Allegheny.”

Dalton was recently honored by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers as the sole recipient at an American college or university of an award for outstanding leadership in strategic enrollment management.

“I’ve known of Allegheny College — and the outstanding experience it provides to highly talented students — seemingly my entire life,” said Dalton, who is a native of Erie, Pa. “The opportunity to work with a visionary like President Mullen, his talented executive team, an extraordinary faculty and a committed staff is both humbling and motivating at the same time.”

As senior vice president for strategic planning at Mercer University, Dalton was responsible for the development, maintenance, evaluation and advancement of the university’s 10-year plan. During his three years as the university’s senior vice president for enrollment management, Mercer enrolled its largest freshman classes in a decade and its largest ever incoming class of international students.

Dalton served for 10 years, from 1998 to 2008, as vice president for enrollment management and associate academic dean for program development at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn. From 1993 to 1998 he worked at the University of the Incarnate Word/Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, Texas, most recently as dean of enrollment management. Before that Dalton served as associate director of admissions at Gannon University in Erie.

He holds a B.A. in political science and a master of public administration from Gannon University. He earned a Ph.D. in education administration from the University of Texas at Austin.

Dalton’s wife, Diana, is also an Erie native. They have three children: Abby, 19; Shawn, 17; and Ian, 14.

SLU Names New VP to Oversee Enrollment, Retention Management

Saint Louis University has appointed Jay Goff vice president for enrollment and retention management. His appointment follows a national search and is effective Aug. 15. Goff is the vice provost and dean of enrollment management at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo., where he is credited for raising the national academic profile of the student body and increasing enrollment by nearly 56 percent, among other milestones for the school. At SLU, Goff will oversee Undergraduate and Graduate Admission, Student Financial Services, Student Educational Services, International Services and the Office of the Registrar. He will report to Manoj Patankar, Ph.D., vice president for the Frost campus. “I am thrilled that we have attracted a candidate of Jay’s caliber for this important position,” Patankar said. “Jay is a visionary and collaborative leader who has a real passion for what he does. I’m confident that he’s the right person to lead SLU’s recruitment and retention efforts.”

Goff joined Missouri S&T in 2001 as its first dean of enrollment management. Overall enrollment climbed from 4,626 in 2000 to 7,206 in 2010. The academic quality of incoming students — in terms of ACT and SAT scores — rose to among the upper eight percent of college-bound students in the United States. During his tenure, Missouri S&T also has experienced a 53-percent increase in qualified admission applicants as well as record numbers of applicants with perfect ACT/SAT scores. Additionally, the campus set new records for recruitment and graduation rates among female, minority and international students. Goff also worked to improve access for students with greater financial need and forged new partnerships in Asia to expand the school’s international student base. In 2005, student leaders at Missouri S&T recognized Goff for his strong emphasis on student success by awarding him their “Student Advocate” award.

The appointment is a homecoming for Goff, who grew up in the St. Louis area. He said he has always admired and respected Saint Louis University and is excited to join the SLU community. “During my interactions with campus leaders, I was truly impressed with everyone’s vision for excellence,” he said. “The faculty, administration, staff and students are very engaged and have a strong desire for SLU to continue to rise and to improve on a global level. I wanted to be part of that vision.” Ellen Harshman, Ph.D., dean of the John Cook School of Business, led the search committee that recommended Goff. She said that members enthusiastically endorsed him for the role. “We interviewed a number of highly qualified candidates, but Jay was the clear frontrunner,” Harshman said. “Jay is strategic, data-driven and truly understands the current state of higher education enrollment management.”

(909) 621-8515Seth Allen Named Vice President and Dean of Admissions & Financial Aid at Pomona College

Seth Allen, dean of admission and financial aid at Grinnell College, has been appointed vice president and dean of admissions and financial aid at Pomona College, one of the nation’s premier liberal arts colleges. Allen will start at Pomona on July 18, 2011.

“Seth Allen is a widely respected leader in the field and brings a deep understanding of best practices in admissions and financial aid to this new role at Pomona College,” says Pomona College President David W. Oxtoby. “Our commitment to remaining a leader in making education accessible to all students, regardless of financial circumstances, will continue as a core principle under his leadership, and I look forward to working closely with him to further strengthen the excellent program we have on our campus.”

With 20 years of experience in college admissions, Allen will be a member of the Pomona College senior leadership team and manage a financial aid budget of $29.3 million and a staff of 26 people in the offices of admissions and financial aid. Pomona is one of a small handful of institutions committed to need-blind admissions and to meeting full, demonstrated financial aid need without requiring loans. For the class entering in fall of 2011, the College received approximately 7,200 applications for approximately 400 spots.

At Grinnell, Allen is the chief enrollment officer responsible for policy development and strategic planning related to admissions, financial aid and enrollment. Among his accomplishments has been a broad increase in the ethnic, economic and international diversity of entering students and an increase in first-generation college students. He also led campus-wide reviews of middle-class college affordability issues and played a key role in elevating Grinnell’s presence in national media.

Allen previously served as dean of admissions at Dickinson College with responsibility for all phases of the admissions cycle, managing a staff of 19. During his eight-year tenure at Dickinson, there were significant increases in applications, average SAT scores and minority and international enrollment. He began his career in admissions at Johns Hopkins University, where he rose from admissions counselor to director of enrollment planning, research and technology.

On a national level, Allen currently serves on the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) Membership Committee and on the College Board’s Midwest Regional Forum Planning Committee (chair 2011-12), Midwest Regional Counsel (chair-elect 2011-12) and as a member of its Guidance and Admission Assembly Council and Recruitment and Admissions Advisory Committee. From 2005-2010, he was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Common Application and served as president from 2008-2009.

Allen earned both his B.A. in economics and an M.S. in Applied Behavioral Sciences from Johns Hopkins University, as well as certificate in change management.

Pomona College, founded in 1887, offers a comprehensive program in the arts, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. It is known for the close relationships between students and faculty, and a range of opportunities for student research. Pomona is the founding member of The Claremont Colleges, a unique consortium of five undergraduate and two graduate institutions.

Announcement from Stetson University, May 17, 2011:

Joel Bauman named Stetson University VP for Enrollment Management

Joel Bauman, a seasoned admission and financial aid leader with experience at universities in New York, Utah, Florida and internationally, has been selected as Stetson University’s new vice president for Enrollment Management. He will join Stetson August 2011, succeeding Deborah J. Thompson, who has accepted a position in South Carolina.

Bauman brings more than 20 years of experience in higher education to his job at Stetson. Since 2004, he has been vice president for Enrollment at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah. Before that, he served at New College of Florida in Sarasota, the University of Tampa and in the New York office of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel.

“As part of our strategic planning, we want to increase undergraduate enrollment at Stetson. In addition to serving the Florida market, we want to attract academically talented, undergraduate students from around the country and indeed the world. It was important that we select someone with a solid record in reinforcing these goals,” said Stetson President Wendy B. Libby. “Joel Bauman led five consecutive years of record new student enrollments at Westminster, and he has had great success in diversifying the student body and attracting students with top academic credentials.”

Bauman will oversee Stetson’s undergraduate and graduate admission and financial aid functions. The university has established a goal to increase undergraduate enrollment to 3,000 undergraduates by fall 2016. Undergraduate enrollment is currently at about 2,200, and Stetson’s incoming class for fall 2011 already looks strong – in terms of numbers and academic quality.

“Being entrusted with the opportunity to contribute to Stetson University, an institution with a tradition of academic excellence and great potential for innovation in American higher education, is a great honor,” said Bauman. “I look forward to partnering with the distinguished faculty, engaged students and top-notch administrative team in finding talented students who will succeed at Stetson.”

Founded in 1875, Westminster is a selective, independent college dedicated to student learning and the purposeful integration of liberal education, professional studies, and civic engagement. It is similar in enrollment to Stetson and also is a member of the New American Colleges, a consortium of colleges and universities nationwide often cited as models of the intentional integration of teaching and learning, scholarship and service.

At Westminster, Bauman oversaw an enrollment increase of 31 percent during his tenure as vice president, and applications increased three-fold. Bauman also oversaw dramatic increases in enrollment of minority students, international students and out-of-state students. The college added new academic programs, facilities and athletic teams to support that growth.

The 2011 chair of the Enrollment Management Affinity group for the New American Colleges and Universities Consortium, Bauman is a member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling, the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and other higher education professional organizations. He is a volunteer board member for the United Jewish Federation of Utah.

He earned his undergraduate degree in anthropology and biology from the University of Denver and a master’s degree and work toward a Ph.D. at New School University in New York. He received fellowships to the National Foundation for Jewish Culture in Israel and The Lady Davis Fellowship Trust at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and has authored papers for several conferences.

Early in his career, Bauman worked as an archeological technician for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Arizona, a museum technician at the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island National Monument in New York and as a seasonal archeologist at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Arizona. He served two years in the 1990s as assistant director on the International Youth and Education Department at the Jewish National Fund in Jerusalem.

Bauman is a devoted father to three daughters, ages 14, 11 and 6.

News from Lewis & Clark College:

February 28, 2011

President Barry Glassner announced today that Lisa Meyer will become the new CAS Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Lewis & Clark College. Meyer, who serves as Vice President of Enrollment at Whittier College, will begin July 5. An Oregon native and Willamette graduate, Meyer has led admissions at Whittier since 2004, demonstrating great expertise in marketing and financial aid management.

“Lisa brings an abundance of experience, energy, and informed ideas as well as a strong affinity for Lewis & Clark,” Glassner said. “It’s hard to imagine a better conclusion to the national search for our next admissions dean—a search that attracted strong interest from talented and accomplished enrollment-management professionals throughout the country and brought four outstanding candidates to campus.”

Previous to her position at Whittier, Meyer was Dean of Admissions and Associate Vice President for Institutional Image at the University of La Verne in California. She has also served as Director of Foundation and Corporate Relations and Stewardship at Scripps College; Director of College Guidance at the Webb Schools in Claremont, Calif.; Director of Admission at Pitzer College, and Assistant Director of Admission and Financial Aid at Pacific University.

In addition to her undergraduate work at Willamette, Meyer has a master’s degree in English Literature from Boston College and has pursued doctoral studies at Claremont Graduate University.

From growing up in Oregon and working in the higher ed sector, Meyer said she is well-versed in Lewis & Clark’s liberal arts education and sees its unique value in a world that has become so connected and challenging.

“Now, more than ever, Lewis & Clark’s mission resonates with what is happening in the state, the country, and the world,” Meyer said. “Whether training nimble thinkers to navigate and lead in a challenging—and fast-changing—global economy, growing an informed citizenry who is actively engage in social and political initiatives, or fostering emerging talent in the arts, sciences, and humanities, Lewis & Clark has a solid history of preparing its graduates to succeed in life, both professionally and personally.

“I look forward to representing this remarkable college to the broader community, and to working closely with students and their families as they explore the limitless possibilities inherent in a Lewis & Clark education.”

Meyer’s appointment concludes a search that began last fall under the direction of an eight-member search committee and with the help of Lahti Search Consultants. Interim dean Jim Sumner, who was instrumental in the search, said he was thrilled for Lewis & Clark to have attracted such a well-respected professional with such wide-ranging experience. “In addition to her strong, vital knowledge of Lewis & Clark’s key admission markets, advanced technical and data skills, and record of vast productivity, Lisa has an impressive track record as a savvy marketer and as a scholar in her own right,” Sumner said. “Trustees, professors, students and staff with whom she has worked are consistently appreciative of her work ethic, creativity, and collegiality.”

Meyer is married to Darren Ferris, and they have a 16-year-old son, Austin. Meyer said she and her family will be making trips to Portland over the spring and look forward to taking advantage of the outdoors and local food scene.

News release from St. Lawrence University:

CANTON – Jeffrey Rickey, vice president and dean of admissions and financial aid at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, has been named vice president and dean of admissions and financial aid at St. Lawrence University. President William L. Fox announced the appointment to campus today; Rickey will begin his new duties on August 1.

“I am very pleased to welcome Jeff Rickey to the St. Lawrence community,” President Fox said. “Jeff is nationally known in his circle of senior admissions officers and enrollment managers. He impressed me and the search committee with his experience with measurements of institutional excellence, his work with strategic planning and the identification of new recruitment and admissions opportunities, and his understanding of the core nature of the liberal arts college in America.”

At Earlham, where he has been in his current position since 1998, Rickey has increased undergraduate applications and enrollment, including significant improvements in enrolling students who represent geographic, ethnic and international diversity. Prior to joining the staff at Earlham, Rickey was dean of admissions at George Fox University, his undergraduate alma mater. In addition, he has been active in a number of national higher education organizations; served as a member of the 2007-2008 National Commission on the Use of Standardized Testing in Undergraduate Admissions; and chaired the Finance Committee of the 11,000-member National Association for College Admission Counseling.

“I am honored and thrilled to be joining the St. Lawrence University community,” Rickey said. “From the students, faculty, staff, alumni and trustees I met during the search process, I discovered many treasures, tangible and intangible. At every turn my excitement grew about the possibility of joining. I look forward to building on the good work of my colleague [former St. Lawrence Vice President and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid] Terry Cowdrey and the accomplished admissions and financial aid team she has led. St. Lawrence’s story is authentic and compelling. I look forward to sharing it.”

A selective, residential liberal arts college, Earlham offers bachelors’ degrees in 40 disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields, along with a Master of Arts in teaching and a Master of Education degree.
